| From "The Island City" by John Holt. "A wireless station was built on the hill near Kendall's Head in 1910. On Jan. 18, 1910, the first message was sent to the Eastern Steamship Co. steamer Calvin Austin at her berth in Saint John. A clear reply was heard from the ship's operator and the station was in business. Nightly communication with Cape Hatteras, Nantucket and other coastal points was a novelty. The first private message was passed on January 26, 1910, when Herbert Kilby was notified that James McGregor, George Morrison and Chester Allingham, on board the Calvin Austin just off Mount Desert Island, were "all well." The new wireless station aided rescue work for the revenue cutters. In April 1912, the Kendall's Head station was among those receiving the distress signals of the S.S. Titanic. After 1912 the station appears to have been discontinued. |
| We would like to thank Mr Bill Holly for the postcards of the wireless station. |
